OA in placement stands for Online Assessment. It is a timed, usually proctored online test that most companies use as the first elimination round in a campus drive in India. It typically combines aptitude, reasoning, verbal ability and coding, and only candidates who clear the cutoff are called for interviews.
Companies run an OA first because thousands of students can register for one drive and interviews are expensive. The test ranks everyone on the same questions at the same time. Most OAs last between one and three hours, and you take them on a laptop at your campus lab, at an exam centre or from home, depending on the drive.
A typical OA has three to five sections: quantitative aptitude, logical reasoning, verbal ability, a quiz on computer science basics such as OOP, DBMS, operating systems and networks, and one or more coding problems. Companies often set the cutoff after the test, based on how many candidates they want to interview. A score that clears one drive can miss another.
Prepare in this order. Learn the pattern of the company you are targeting. Practise aptitude in timed blocks every day, because speed is the real skill. Solve coding problems in the language you will use in the test, and practise reading input and printing output exactly as asked. Then take full length mock papers in test conditions: one sitting, no pauses and no phone.
On test day, scan every section in the first minute. Attempt the questions you are sure of first. In coding, write a working simple solution before you try to optimise it, then test it on edge cases such as empty input, a single element and very large values. Most OAs are proctored, so keep a stable connection, close other tabs and avoid switching windows, because the platform may flag it.
Results usually arrive by email or on the company portal within a few days to a couple of weeks. Shortlisted candidates are called for technical and HR rounds. If you are not shortlisted, many companies let you apply again in a later cycle, so check their re-application policy.
