How Campus Placement Drives Work: The Full OA, GD, Technical, and HR Pipeline
A campus placement drive is not one interview. It is a step by step elimination pipeline, usually 3 to 5 rounds, where each round filters for a different skill or trait. Understanding the pipeline in advance is the most underrated edge in campus placement.
The standard mass recruiter pipeline
For TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant, Capgemini, and most other mass campus recruiters, the pipeline follows this sequence:

Round 1: Online Aptitude Test (OA)
The OA is the volume filter. With thousands of candidates across campuses, the company needs to shrink the pool to a size a human panel can handle. The OA does this by scoring everyone automatically.
What gets tested
Quantitative Aptitude: percentages, profit and loss, time, speed, distance, ratio and proportion, series completion. Usually 20 to 30 questions in 25 to 40 minutes.
Logical Reasoning: syllogisms, blood relations, seating arrangements, coding and decoding. Around 20 to 25 questions.
Verbal Ability and English: reading comprehension, sentence correction, grammar, vocabulary. Around 20 to 30 questions.
Technical MCQs for CS roles: output prediction, data structures, algorithm complexity, SQL, OOP concepts. Around 20 to 30 questions.
Coding round, where it applies: 1 to 2 problems in 30 to 60 minutes. TCS NQT has an Advanced Coding section, and Wipro NLTH has a mandatory coding part.
Round 2: Technical Interview
The technical round tests how deeply you know your subject. The panel is usually 1 to 2 senior employees. For freshers, the focus is on fundamentals. They do not expect production experience.
Core topics for every tech role
Data Structures and Algorithms (arrays, linked lists, trees, graphs, sorting, searching, time complexity)
Object Oriented Programming (encapsulation, inheritance, polymorphism, abstraction, with code examples)
Database Management Systems (SQL queries, normalization, joins, ACID properties)
Operating Systems (process versus thread, deadlock, paging, segmentation)
Computer Networks (OSI model, TCP/IP, HTTP versus HTTPS, DNS)
Your final year project. Be ready for deep follow up questions on every technology you used.
Round 3: Group Discussion (GD)
Not all companies run a GD round. TCS rarely does for their standard drive, but Infosys, Capgemini, and Accenture often include it. The GD is a filter for communication and critical thinking.
How GD topics are chosen
Topics fall into three groups: abstract, such as 'Blue is better than red', current affairs, such as AI regulation, and business or management, such as 'Should companies monitor remote workers?'. The group does not change what is scored. Content quality and communication do.
Round 4: HR Interview
The HR round is the offer probability round. The company has already decided you are technically fit. Now they check how long you will stay, whether you match the culture, and whether you will accept the offer. Most students treat this as a formality and lose points they already earned.
Trim 'Tell me about yourself' to 90 seconds, no more. Practice it aloud at least 10 times.
Know your salary expectations against the known package for the role. 'I am flexible' reads as unprepared.
Have a real answer to 'Why this company?', something specific to their product, culture, or growth, not a generic 'it is a great company'.
Prepare for relocation, shift, and bond questions. Give clear answers, not hedged ones.
Close the interview actively. Ask 'Is there anything in my profile you would like me to clarify?'. It signals confidence and gives you a chance to recover.
